Free self-reflection quiz

The attachment style quiz

This attachment style quiz has 24 statements, takes about 4 minutes, is free and needs no signup. Your answers stay in your browser. It is a self-reflection tool, not a diagnosis.

  • Private: your answers stay on this device. We only measure anonymously how the site is used, such as where people click, without recognizing you or your answers.
  • Your pace: you can stop and come back later, your answers wait here.
  • Go with your gut: answer how you usually are, not how you would like to be.

Think of your close relationships: a partner, or if you have none right now, the people you are closest to.

How this attachment style quiz works

You rate 24 short statements about closeness, trust and space in your close relationships. There are no right answers and no trick questions: answer for how you usually are, not for how you would like to be.

Behind the statements are the two dimensions that adult attachment research measures: attachment anxiety, how much you worry that the people you love will pull away, and attachment avoidance, how uneasy closeness and depending on others make you. The attachment style test turns your answers into a score on each dimension and shows where you land on a map with four corners, one for each style.

The result is a snapshot for self-reflection, not a diagnosis. Most people sit closer to one corner than to the others, and many sit near a border. A new relationship, a breakup or a stressful stretch can move your dot, which is why you see both scores and not only a label.

How the quiz was built and what it can and cannot tell you

The four attachment styles your result can show

Secure attachment Harbor

Closeness and independence both feel safe. You can say what you need, trust that people will usually respond, and repair after an argument. Secure does not mean never worried: it means the worry settles instead of taking over.

Anxious attachment Spark

Closeness matters intensely, and small signs of distance set off an alarm. You may reread messages, need reassurance and find it hard to let a conflict rest. Behind it is a real strength: you are attuned and willing to work hard for the people you love.

Avoidant attachment Island

Independence feels safe, and too much closeness or need can feel like pressure. You may pull back when things get serious and prefer to handle problems alone. You do care, often a great deal, and tend to show it through actions more than words.

Fearful avoidant attachment Pendulum

You want closeness and fear it at the same time, so you may reach out warmly and then pull away. Both moves are genuine. With steady people around you and some understanding of the swing, the pendulum can settle.

FAQ

Attachment style quiz: questions people ask

What are the four types of attachment styles?

Secure, anxious, avoidant and fearful-avoidant. Each is a corner of the same map: little worry and little discomfort with closeness is secure, mostly worry is anxious, mostly discomfort with closeness is avoidant, and a lot of both is fearful-avoidant. The quiz places you on that map rather than in a box.

What is the most accurate attachment style quiz?

Researchers usually measure adult attachment with established questionnaires such as the Experiences in Close Relationships scales, which score attachment anxiety and avoidance. No online quiz, this one included, is a clinical assessment. A self-report quiz is most useful when it measures both dimensions, shows your scores instead of only a label and is open about its limits. Our page on how the quiz works explains how this one was built.

What is the rarest type of attachment style?

Fearful-avoidant is often described as the least common style, but there is no single reliable figure. How many people fall into each style depends on the sample, the country, the questionnaire and where researchers draw the lines between styles. In many studies secure is the pattern people describe most often.

Which attachment style is hardest to love?

None of the styles makes a person hard to love. Each comes with its own needs: reassurance for anxious attachment, room for avoidant attachment, predictability for fearful-avoidant attachment. Fearful-avoidant is sometimes described as the hardest to live with, for the person as much as for a partner, because closeness is wanted and feared at the same time.

How long does the attachment style test take?

About 4 minutes. There are 24 statements, and you can stop at any point and come back later: your answers wait in your browser.

Does the quiz store my answers?

Your answers are saved only in your browser on this device, so you can continue later, and they are never sent to us. We count anonymously how the site is used, never your answers or your result.
